Genting Highlands: nature and ATV

Key facts

Quad bikes, buggies, cloud forest and Chin Swee Temple: a guide to outdoor activities in Genting Highlands, with prices, access and weather.

Genting Highlands is also a mountain. At 1,700 metres, an hour from Kuala Lumpur, the resort hides a side many visitors miss: cloud forest, tea plantations, hilltop temples, quad bike trails and jungle paths. Most stay inside the malls and ride the roller coasters, then leave without seeing the rest.

This article is for travellers who want the other Genting. The one with horse riding, mountain biking, mud-covered buggy runs and viewpoints over the Titiwangsa valley. It also covers practical details: prices, mountain weather and how to reach the resort without a car.

To place Genting inside a longer trip, start with our Genting Highlands page. It frames the resort within the wider highlands region. Here, we go into what you can actually do without spending the day in a theme park.

Why Genting Highlands draws so many visitors

Genting sits in Pahang state, on the Selangor border, along the Titiwangsa range. The air is noticeably cooler than Kuala Lumpur: expect 18 to 24 °C during the day, against 28 to 33 °C in the capital. At night, temperatures often drop below 18 °C, and you will want a jacket.

The resort started in the 1960s around a casino, then grew into a family destination with parks, hotels and shopping centres. It remains one of the easiest escapes from Kuala Lumpur: about an hour by highway, a little more on the mountain road.

That proximity explains the mix of crowds. Families come for the rides, groups come for the casino, and some travellers come only for the views and the outdoor activities. All three coexist, but they rarely occupy the same areas.

Outdoor activities worth trying

The name that comes up most often in searches is Monster ATV Park, one of the best-known quad operators on the mountain. You rent a quad for guided runs through forest and along ridges, with routes suited to beginners and more experienced riders alike.

Prices run around 80 to 150 RM for 30 to 45 minutes, depending on the machine and group size. Rates shift with the season and the operator, so treat these as indicative and check on site. Wear clothes you are willing to ruin: mud is part of the experience, especially after rain.

Ayu Borneo, based near Gohtong Jaya, offers something different: horse riding, treetop rope courses, archery and buggy excursions. It suits families with children, or anyone who prefers a calmer pace than quad biking.

To compare operators, durations and budgets before booking, our Activities and excursions page lists the options available in the region.

Quads, buggies and the rest

Quad biking is the most requested activity, but it is not the only one. Trails around the resort also work for hiking, and several operators run guided trips into the cloud forest. Departures are usually in the morning, when the mist lifts and visibility is at its best.

Hiking and the cloud forest

The cloud forest is the most interesting ecosystem in the area. At this altitude, the vegetation changes completely: mosses, tree ferns, wild orchids and lichen-covered trees. The constant humidity creates a distinctive atmosphere, especially early in the day.

The most accessible trail leads to the Mossy Forest, a boardwalk route through moss and roots. Go early: after 10 am the tour groups arrive and the mist often burns off, which takes away much of the appeal.

Gunung Nuang and the nearby ridges attract more experienced hikers, with long and sometimes slippery climbs. Hiking shoes are essential, along with plenty of water. For more trail ideas across Malaysia, see our Hiking section.

Chin Swee Temple and the viewpoints

Chin Swee Caves Temple is one of the most visited sites in Genting, and entry is free. Built on a rocky outcrop, it offers a wide view over the valley and holds a Buddha statue and a nine-storey pagoda.

The temple sits halfway up, on the Awana SkyWay cable car route. Many visitors stop there on the way up or down. It is also a good spot for a quiet break, away from the mall crowds.

The viewing deck near the upper cable car station gives one of the best panoramas on the mountain, especially at sunset when clouds cling to the ridges. Bring a jacket: the wind is strong and the temperature drops quickly.

Getting there from Kuala Lumpur

You have three main options.

By car or ride-hailing: about an hour from central Kuala Lumpur via the Karak Highway, then the mountain road. The trip can take twice as long at weekends and on public holidays.

By bus: regular departures run from KL Sentral and Terminal Bersepadu Selatan. The journey takes 1.5 to 2 hours and costs around 10 to 20 RM. The bus drops you at the lower bus terminal, where the cable car or a shuttle takes you up to the resort.

By cable car: the Awana SkyWay links the village of Gohtong Jaya to the summit. A return ticket costs around 18 to 30 RM depending on the cabin type. It is the most scenic and the fastest option.

To arrange the trip without hassle, our Transport and transfers service runs private connections from Kuala Lumpur and the airport.

When to go and what to pack

The resort is open all year, but the relatively dry season (May to September) brings clearer mornings. The wet season (November to February) means frequent showers, often in the late afternoon.

Mist is present most mornings: it gives the resort its character, but it also reduces visibility from the viewpoints. If you are coming for the panoramas, aim for late morning or late afternoon.

Pack a windproof jacket, closed shoes and, if you are quad biking, a change of clothes. Night temperatures can fall to around 15 °C, which often surprises visitors used to the heat of Kuala Lumpur.

What it costs

A weekend in Genting stays affordable if you sleep lower down or in Kuala Lumpur and come up for the day.

ItemIndicative budget
Return transport from KL20-150 RM
Cable car return18-30 RM
Quad bike (30-45 min)80-150 RM
Meals on site15-40 RM
Budget hotel night150-300 RM

These figures are indicative and vary with the season and how early you book. Activity prices are sometimes negotiable on weekdays, outside school holidays.

Combining Genting with the rest of the highlands

Genting pairs well with other mountain stops. Cameron Highlands, about four hours away, deserves at least two days, and our Cameron Highlands guide covers the itinerary. If you would rather be by the sea, the east coast islands are a few more hours down the road.

Many travellers do a day trip from Kuala Lumpur, which leaves little time for outdoor activities. Staying one night on the mountain, or down in the Gohtong Jaya valley, lets you hit the trails early in the morning.

Why give it a full day

If you come only for the parks and the casino, half a day is enough. If you want the quads, the Mossy Forest, the temple and the viewpoints, plan a full day, or a night.

The resort is often described as a theme park destination. The reality is broader, and travellers who step outside the buildings find a mountain that is still largely forested. That is where the best experiences are.

FAQ

Do I need to book quad biking in advance?

On weekdays outside holidays, you can often book on the spot. At weekends and during Malaysian public holidays, book two or three days ahead, because morning slots fill quickly.

Is quad biking suitable for beginners?

Yes. Most tours are guided and the machines are automatic. Children are usually accepted as passengers from age 8 or 10, depending on the operator. Wear closed clothing.

When is the best time for the Mossy Forest?

Early morning, ideally before 9 am. The mist is still there, the light is soft, and the day-trippers have not arrived.

Can you visit Genting without a car?

Yes. A bus from KL Sentral, then the Awana SkyWay cable car, gets you to the resort without driving. Internal shuttles run between the hotels and the main attractions.

Do I need a jacket?

Yes, especially in the evening. Temperatures regularly drop below 18 °C and can approach 15 °C at night. A windbreaker is enough during the day, but a warmer jacket helps after sunset.
