Two weeks are enough for a first taste: Kuala Lumpur and its towers, the temples of Batu Caves, the lanes of Penang and Malacca, the beaches of Langkawi and the Perhentian islands. The best season runs from March to October on the west coast, and May to September on the east coast.

Malaysia appeals for its cost of living, affordable private healthcare and international schools. The main visas are MM2H (long-stay residence), the Employment Pass (work) and the Digital Nomad Pass. Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Johor Bahru host most expats.

Where is Malaysia and how do I get there? +

Malaysia is in Southeast Asia, between Thailand and Singapore, and is made up of two parts separated by the South China Sea: peninsular Malaysia and the island of Borneo. There are no regular direct flights from most European cities to Kuala Lumpur; common routings go through Istanbul, Doha, Dubai or Singapore, with a total travel time of around 14 to 17 hours depending on the stopover.

What is the best time to visit Malaysia? +

Malaysia has an equatorial climate, hot and humid all year round (27 to 33 °C). The best period depends on the coast: March to October on the west coast (Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Langkawi) and May to September on the east coast (Perhentian, Redang, Tioman). The rainy season does not prevent travel: showers are usually short and tend to fall in the late afternoon.

Do I need a visa to travel to Malaysia? +

Citizens of most Western countries benefit from visa exemption for a tourist stay of up to 90 days. Since 2024, travellers must also complete the MDAC (Malaysia Digital Arrival Card), a free online form to be filled in within three days before arrival. For long stays or work, other visas apply (MM2H, Employment Pass, Digital Nomad Pass).

What budget should I plan for living in Malaysia? +

Malaysia has one of the lowest costs of living in Southeast Asia at an equivalent level of comfort. A single expat can live comfortably on around €800 to €1,200 per month in Kuala Lumpur, accommodation included. A traveller can budget €40 to €70 per day depending on accommodation and activities. These amounts vary widely between Kuala Lumpur and secondary cities, which are noticeably cheaper.

Is English enough to live in Malaysia? +

Yes, English is widely spoken in Malaysia, especially in cities, hotels, private hospitals and international schools. Malay is the national language, but English is the language of instruction in many programmes and is understood in most everyday situations. Learning a few words of Malay is appreciated but not essential to settle in.
