Cameron Highlands: Best Time to Visit — Weather, Seasons and Month-by-Month Guide (2026)
Key facts
When to visit Cameron Highlands: month-by-month weather, temperatures, rainfall, seasons, and the best time for tea, strawberries, hiking and the Mossy Forest. Practical 2026 guide.
Cameron Highlands does not follow the same climate as the rest of Malaysia. Perched between 1,200 and 1,800 metres in the Titiwangsa range, this region of cultivated hills lives to its own weather rhythm: mild days, genuinely cool nights, clouds that climb in the early afternoon, and showers that fall without warning all year round. "When to visit Cameron Highlands" is therefore a real question, not a planning detail.
The good news is that there is no bad season in the strict sense — unlike the east-coast islands, which shut down during the monsoon. There are drier windows, wetter windows, and above all daily time slots that change everything. This guide breaks down month by month the temperatures, rainfall, the best time for your chosen activity (tea, strawberries, hiking, sunrise, mossy forest) and the pitfalls to avoid.

Cameron Highlands climate at a glance
Cameron Highlands sits at an altitude that places it in a highland tropical forest zone. In practice, this means three things.
First, it is never hot. Daytime highs hover around 21 to 25 °C, and lows regularly drop between 12 and 16 °C — and below 12 °C on some January or February nights in Brinchang (1,500 m). Many visitors arrive in shorts and a t-shirt and spend the evening shivering: bring a fleece and a windbreaker, even in the dry season.
Second, rain is part of the scenery. The region receives roughly 2,500 to 3,000 mm of rain per year, spread across almost every month. This is not whole days of rain but showers, often short and intense, typically in the late afternoon and evening. The famous Cameron Highlands "mist" is really the humidity condensing as warm lowland air rises and cools on the ridges.
Third, altitude changes both the nights and the access. The mountain roads (Tapah, Simpang Pulai) can be foggy, especially late in the day and at dawn. Driving at night is not advised — not because of traffic, but because of visibility.
Key takeaway: the best time of day to head out is almost always the morning, before 11 am. Clouds build in the early afternoon and cling to the ridges until evening.
When to go by weather: month by month
The table below gives the usual observed ranges. These are trends, not guarantees: a dry November weekend exists, just as a rainy week in March does.
| Month | Temperature (day / night) | Rain | What to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | 22-24 °C / 13-15 °C | Moderate | Coolest nights with February. Generally clear days. |
| February | 23-25 °C / 13-15 °C | Low | Start of the driest spell. Excellent for sunrise. |
| March | 23-25 °C / 14-16 °C | Low | Peak dry season. Best visibility on the ridges. |
| April | 23-25 °C / 14-16 °C | Low | Last genuinely dry month. Ideal for hiking. |
| May | 23-24 °C / 14-16 °C | Moderate | Transition. More frequent but often brief showers. |
| June | 22-24 °C / 14-16 °C | Moderate | Fine. Persistent morning fog on the summits. |
| July | 22-23 °C / 13-15 °C | Moderate | Largely favourable, cool nights. |
| August | 22-23 °C / 13-15 °C | Moderate | Similar to July. Good value-to-conditions balance. |
| September | 22-23 °C / 13-15 °C | Moderate to high | Showers intensify late in the month. |
| October | 21-23 °C / 13-15 °C | High | One of the wettest months. Slippery trails. |
| November | 21-23 °C / 13-15 °C | High | A month to avoid for hiking and the Mossy Forest. |
| December | 21-23 °C / 13-15 °C | High | Very wet, but a successful cosy "tea indoors" mood. |
The verdict is clear: February to April is the best weather window. June to August is the safest second choice. October to December is the wettest period — not a dealbreaker for a short, plantation-focused visit, but best avoided if hiking or sunrise is the goal.
Should you fear the monsoon?
Cameron Highlands has no "closing" monsoon like the east-coast islands (Perhentian, Redang, Tioman), where tourist infrastructure shuts down during the north-east monsoon. Here, everything stays open all year: plantations, tea houses, farms, markets, tours.
What changes is the comfort of doing things. In the rainy season, trails turn into slippery mud, the Mossy Forest boardwalk can be closed for safety, and the sunrise at Gunung Brinchang is often clouded over. Everything else — BOH Sungai Palas, strawberry farms, the Brinchang markets, Cactus Valley, the Time Tunnel Museum — works in any weather.
In short: if you come only for hiking and views, aim for the dry season. If you mainly want the plantations and the cool-weather atmosphere, the rainy season is perfectly manageable and far less crowded.
One practical point often overlooked: in the wet season, the Brinchang night market (Friday and Saturday evenings) remains one of the best moments of the trip, rain or not. And the Chinese steamboat restaurants make perfect sense when it is 15 °C outside.
The best time by activity
The right period depends heavily on what you have come for. Here is the activity-by-activity reading.
For tea plantations and classic sights
Almost any time of year. The BOH Sungai Palas plantation, Cameron Valley, and the panoramic tea houses can be visited in any season. Just avoid weekends and Malaysian public holidays: the region is Kuala Lumpur residents' favourite weekend getaway, access roads jam and prices peak. On weekdays, outside festive periods, you will have the places almost to yourself.
On rainy days these sites remain the best fallback. Our half-day tour covers plantations and viewpoints and runs in any weather.
For strawberry picking and farms
Strawberries grow year-round in Cameron Highlands thanks to the altitude, but harvests are more generous in the dry season, January to April. Several farms (around Kea Farm) open to the public for picking, a perfect activity with children. March and April offer the best conditions: abundant fruit, workable ground.
For hiking and trails
This is where the season matters most. The trails around Tanah Rata (Robinson and Parit waterfalls, trails 1 to 10) and the Mossy Forest routes are markedly safer and more pleasant from February to April. In October-December, roots are slippery, descents become dangerous and some sections are closed. If hiking is your priority, plan the trip outside the rainy season. See also our Hiking in Malaysia page for routes and levels.
For sunrise and the Mossy Forest
Gunung Brinchang (2,032 m) and the mossy forest are visited early in the morning, by 4x4 or organised tour, by reservation. Summit visibility is best from February to April, when morning cloud cover is higher. In the wet season you often climb into thick fog and return without views. Our sunrise tour covers exactly this programme — book a few days ahead, especially at weekends.
For photos and mist
The famous Cameron Highlands fog is a photographic asset, not a flaw. For that, any season works: you just need to be at altitude in the early afternoon. This is precisely why setting off early in the morning remains the golden rule: you enjoy the light and the view before the clouds roll in.
When to go: practical tips
A few rules worth more than any statistic.
Set off early in the morning. This is the single most important tip. Clouds build from 11 am-1 pm and cling to the ridges. A site visited at 8:30 am is nothing like the same site at 3 pm.
Pack three layers. Mild day, cool evening, damp forest: fleece or jumper, waterproof windbreaker, closed grippy shoes. Sandals are a bad idea on the trails.
Avoid weekends and public holidays if you can. The region is hugely popular for weekends: jammed roads, expensive hotels, crowded sites. On weekdays the experience changes completely.
Do not drive at night. The mountain road from Tapah or Simpang Pulai is winding and foggy. Descend in daylight. A private transfer from Kuala Lumpur, KLIA or Ipoh avoids car hire and the stress of the road.
Check seasonal openings. Some farms, gardens and attractions close one day a week, and the Mossy Forest can close for maintenance or safety after heavy rain. A quick check the day before is enough.
Always have a plan B. Rain is unpredictable. Keep two or three covered sites in mind (Time Tunnel Museum, Cactus Valley, lavender garden, Sam Poh temple, tea houses) so you do not lose half a day.
Which period to choose, in summary
- Best overall period: February, March, April — driest, best visibility, ideal for sunrise and hiking.
- Good second choice: June, July, August — decent conditions, cool nights, often good value outside weekends.
- Avoid for outdoor activities: October, November, December — wettest months, slippery trails, often clouded summits.
- All year round: tea plantations, farms, markets, tea houses, museums — no seasonal constraint.
- Also all year round: the charm of highland coolness and mist, which depends on no season.
FAQ: when to visit Cameron Highlands
What is the best time to visit Cameron Highlands?
February to April: the driest period, with the best visibility on the ridges, ideal for sunrise at Gunung Brinchang and for hiking. June to August is a good second choice.
What is the weather like in Cameron Highlands in December?
December is one of the wettest months, with frequent showers and nights around 13-15 °C. Everything stays open, but hiking and sunrise are compromised. It is the time for a short, plantation-and-tea-house-focused trip.
Is it cold in Cameron Highlands?
It does not freeze, but nights often drop to around 13-15 °C, and below 12 °C on some January-February evenings. Daytime is 21-25 °C. A fleece and windbreaker are essential in the evening.
Can you visit Cameron Highlands during the rainy season?
Yes. Unlike the east-coast islands, the region never closes. Plantations, farms, markets, tea houses and museums work in any weather. Only the trails and the Mossy Forest become problematic.
How many days should you plan and in which period?
Two days and one night is the right format. In the dry season (Feb-Apr) you can chain sunrise, Mossy Forest and plantations without constraint; in the wet season, favour a short visit focused on covered sites.
