DE Rantau Nomad Pass: The Ultimate Guide for Remote Workers

In 2022, Malaysia launched the DE Rantau program to position the country as a preferred hub for digital nomads in Southeast Asia. Managed by MDEC (Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation), this program offers a dedicated visa called the Professional Visit Pass (Digital Nomad). It is designed specifically for remote workers, freelancers, and independent contractors in the digital domain. Whether you are a software developer from Europe, a digital marketer from the US, or a content creator from Australia, the nomad pass allows you to legally live in Malaysia while working for clients located anywhere else in the world. What sets Malaysia apart is the 'Nomad-Ready' ecosystem. DE Rantau is not just a visa; it's a network of certified hubs, co-working spaces, and accommodation providers that offer high-speed internet and community events. With a low cost of living, high-speed 5G, and world-class food, Malaysia has quickly become a top rival to Bali and Chiang Mai for the global nomad community.

Financial and Professional Requirements

The nomad pass has clear and transparent entry criteria to ensure it attracts genuine digital professionals: 1. Income Threshold: You must demonstrate an annual income of at least $24,000 USD (or equivalent in other currencies). This is verified through bank statements and income tax records. 2. Digital Domain: Your work must be 'digital' in nature. This includes IT, cybersecurity, blockchain, AI, digital content creation, and digital marketing. 3. Proof of Work: Freelancers must show an active contract with a duration of at least 3 months. Remote employees need an employment contract with a company based outside of Malaysia. 4. Application Fee: The fee is RM 1,000 for the main applicant, which is very competitive compared to other nomad visas globally.

Duration

The pass is valid for up to 12 months and can be renewed once for an additional 12 months, giving you a total of 2 years in the country.

Dependants

Unlike the PVP, nomad pass holders ARE allowed to bring their spouse and children. Each dependant costs an additional RM 500.

Taxation

As a nomad pass holder, your foreign-sourced income is currently not taxed in Malaysia, provided you meet certain criteria. However, you should consult a tax professional regarding your status if you stay more than 182 days.
